Morning Musing on Canada Needing a Minute to Think
Luvlies, Good morning. There have been many political changes in Canada lately, that I think we need a minute to adjust to this new world order.
Last week, we Canadians were invited to join the EU. Canada joining the EU would make it the most resource rich nation part of a poor man’s club… without voting rights?? Hard pass.
Right now, we are having the biggest fire sale that no Canadian has agreed to. Federal and Provincial governments are selling off publicly owned assets – income generating assets – to foreign bidders… without discussing it with Canadians first. Like, what the actual phuck.
We can’t even promise anything to anyone without talking with Indigenous leaders first. Canada will have to have a referendum on many of these new proposals, because that’s how we do things here.
Privatization without a strong Settlements Act similar to the US will be the death of Canadian life as we know it. Stronger accountability laws and harsher consequences will have to be written into law, because currently we have none. If a company violates laws or our rights, we have the most ineffective escalation process that usually resolves to nothing.
We have a legal procurement process that must be followed by Canadian government departments and representatives as well, otherwise we end up with corruption and scandals that will harm our reputation.
I don’t know why our leaders think they have the right to circumvent it. Getting the Freedom of Information Act removed from Ontario allows these economic exchanges to happen without any public documentation.
Freedom of Information Act will have to be reinstated. Periodt.
Canadians are only interested in the immigration aspect of what it means to be part of the EU. Free movement. But we already have free movement for 90 days and special visas for people under 30, so they can reside & work for up to 2 years in some nations. But that should be the last thing we’re concerned with, since the government has cut student loans by 50%. Young people won’t be able to afford the travel and live abroad anyway.
Ugh. I’m spiraling.
As someone who’s actually lived, studied and worked in EU for decades, I’m just struggling to understand the shortsightedness & desperation of all these decisions being announced.
The EU has a right wing problem.
Racism and all the -isms have been their main export for centuries. It’s bad enough having to deal with the anti-Blackness and colorism of the sheltered newbies wanting a big city experience in Canada. Now it will be amplified.
Besides, have we spoken to other countries who partner with the EU? It’s not good. You cannot partner with the EU, because they have little to offer. Their resources come from other nations external to the EU anyway.
Why are we not making deals directly with those countries? Why is Canada not making deals with the African Union instead?
As Canadians, our young people are really in a bind. There are fewer and fewer opportunities for them to work and live in the towns they’re born in. It’s leading to a sense of hopelessness amongst the youth that we haven’t seen in decades.
Just because the bar is in hell with America does not mean that the EU is the right partner for us.
So Canada gurl, put your skirt down. I know it’s been a while since you’ve been in a healthy, reciprocal relationship. But these EU hobosexuals are being nice to us because they need a place to crash and food to eat for the winter.
