Morning Musings on Being an Adult Latchkey Kid
Gworlies, Good morning. We are trying something new here. Instead of procrastinating to update the blog, I am starting a segment called Morning Musings. Think Laney Luvs to Talk crossed with the Artist’s Way morning pages. I’ve set the timer for 28mins and whatever comes out, is anyone’s guess. (No Ai, grammarly, or focus on coherent thought).
I’m currently sitting uncomfortably upright, recovering from a breast reduction surgery. Yes, your gurl finally took the plunge and cut these suckers in half. My operation was 21 days ago and I’ve hated every step of this process. Having a major operation (like boobie removal) makes you realize how broken the Ontario healthcare system is.
Aside from the fact I paid a crazy amount of money out of empty pockets ($5650 to be exact) for and operation that is covered by our provincial health insurance, the surgeon and his team have been dreadful. The performed the operation, handed me a flimsy cheap amazon bra and sent me on my way (a longer post on that will come… TRUST ME). There has been no post-op care whatsoever and the expectation that I can manage the wound treatment, healing, nutrition and maintenance without support is why all Canadians are adult latchkey kids.
Arranging at home nursing has been a bust, but I did manage to arrange for different someones to come in every few days to help me do light work, because of my physical limitations. Last week they helped wash my hair, because I can’t reach my arms above my head and they help with rearrange my bed, fold my laundry and wash dishes. I’m lucky these ladies have been helpful, but to actually get this service (which is covered by OHIP) is one of those tricky things. You have to ask the right person the right question, to get the exact answer you need. Doctor’s don’t even know this service is available and think that you have to be destitute or elderly to be eligible for at-home care services. You don’t.
But as a taxpaying freelancer, I’m tired of everything coming out of my pockets. The fact that people at the surgeon’s office (which is within a hospital network) didn’t know what services are available for their patient who lives alone, and needs post-op care, speaks volumes to me. Genuine question: is nobody learning more than they have to about the job that they do? Is everyone siloed to the point that they have forgotten how to work together and combine their resources?
…and that’s time. Still here? Leave your thoughts down below.
See you tomorrow Luvlies!
