Art Adventure: Denyse Thomasos
Sometimes my day is just full of surprises. I had to trek across the city to the contemporary art gallery district to pick-up some art literature I ordered online. I purchased Denyse Thomasos: just beyond,
which was part of her retrospective at the AGO. I had never heard of this artist before and I was floored by her gorgeous work. We have so much in common with our similar backgrounds and lineage, but her talent was something to reckon with. She passed away at 48, after having an allergic reaction to the dye cast used in an MRI.
The scale of her paintings is what I enjoyed most. I was incredibly moved by the exhibit, so I searched high and low for one of the few copies of her complete works. I found it at the gallery that still represents her and decided to have an art adventure by picking it up directly. When I got to the gallery, they were having a closing party for an exhibit. I ended up staying for the finissage, which might have been a mistake because there were many road accidents that weekend, and it took me hours to get home.
Adult Swim Lessons
As some of you may know, I’ve been taking adult swim lessons, so that I can jump off of yachts this summer (lol). Because these classes are so early in the morning, sometimes our small group is just me and the instructor, so I have a private lesson. Gworl, tell me why I’m part fish now? I cannot believe how quickly all the muscle memory comes back to you from childhood. I was doing drills and deep diving like a professional. Okur? I am ready for that soft life of swimming and summering.
Ballet Edmonton
I closed out the week by watching a performance from Ballet Edmonton at Habourfront Center. These dancers were dancing on water, literally. The performances were ethereal and I felt like I was having an out of body moment. I can’t wait to get back to dancing again. It’s my first love. This injury has intensely kicked my ass for years but I hope that I can get back to it soon.
