My Autumn Reading List is Toasty – BHM UK
Hellur Luvlies! October is here… again. Okay, imma be honest: it’s my favorite month, but not for the reasons you may think. As I’ve said in past posts, I don’t do well with horror or spooky things. My old lady nerves can’t take the suspense. Living a Black life is spooky enough, so I have only dabbled in gentle horreur to build my tolerance.
In my world, October is Black History Month (specifically in the UK), and it starts at the time when African leaders come together to discuss important issue and the Harvest. In my less-than-thrifty past life, this is the time I love to be in London. One of my strongest memories of the city was when a friend took me to see a Flame in the Streets (a 1961 British film about the London race riots) screening at a small library in Brixton. We sat with the elders of that era, munching on tea and biscuits, while watching this film. People shared their stories of that time, and we youngins just listened. It was amazing. If you’re in London, check the London Arts Council or the official BHM site for events.
Yesterday, my review of September’s reading list was posted. I thought I was only going to read 8 books total – but who was I kidding. That never could happen. Libby released a few of my long awaited holds at the same time, so I did a book shuffle… and I’m glad I did.
Soooo… October 2026 will be non-spooky. Sorry, thems the rules. That’s how the gluten-free cookies crumble. #spareapumkins
