Morning Musing on Running Errands in the Ghetto
Luvlies, Good afternoon. I’m coming to you later in the day because I had things to do outside, and now is the first moment I’ve had to sit and ponder.
Outside is the Ghetto. What part you ask? All of it. Another spensive day in Torono and I have little to show. Whenever I’m asked how pricey Toronto is, I tell people it’s a $120/day city:
- a ballet classes cost $24.50;
- a mid bowl of ramen, 5 gyoza and soda is $30 after tax+ tip;
- an umbrella to shelter you from a spontaneous summer downpour is $28;
- 2 small tubes of paint are $25;
- a small watery plain brew, double-double coffee $3.50;
- TTC is $3.5 – $7 (depending if you can get everything done in 90mins);
- and Tide is now $26.99.
This is why I never leave my house.
Another reason I don’t leave is because I witnessed a robbery at the store where I purchased the umbrella. One of those grab and bolt situations. A short man with freckles was running like the wind, with two shoe boxes under his arms, and the poor employee tried to chase him. I looked at the cashier and said, ‘I hate this mall. I’m sorry you have to deal with this’. We both laughed, sighed, and shrugged it off because there was nothing we could do.
Watching people steal is unsettling, and I empathize with their situation… but I also don’t. It’s Toronto’s fault for getting rid of places like Honest Ed’s, where you could buy quality no name products at cost. A good pair of plain white sneakers ran you $20, and they would last longer than a pair of Nikes. Every demographic shopped at places like Honest Ed’s, because it was understood that we were all trying to live within our means. Now the cheapest pair of work boots are $140, and they might last you a year or two, before they fall apart. That’s why I said I get it, but also I don’t.
There’s an air of desperation hanging over many major cities and it’s just sad. It feels like the worst part of the 80-90s, when people who walked the streets would get harassed or mugged, and the Guardian Angels would ride the train keeping people safe. Think MJ’s BAD video or Breakin’ the movie, but with less dancing. Like we had 2 decent decades and that’s it. That’s all we got.
*Le sigh*. That toughness one needs in order to live in a big city, has completely left me. I do not have it in me to be on guard all the time.
…and ALL of this drama before 1:30pm.
If Toronto wants to become the most expensive, live action telenovela, it better count its days before we start demanding a refund.

…and that’s time. Still here? Share your thoughts down below.
See you tomorrow Luvlies!
