Morning Musing on the Perils of Employment
Luvlies, Bahumbug. Is it too early to say this? Why is the most perfect phrase relegated for use only during a certain time of year. Let’s make this a year round sentiment. 2025? Bahumbug. 2026? Bigger BAHUMBUG!
We’re at the end of the second quarter and first half of the year… and I’m over it. The ‘Get off my lawn‘ energy has prevailed since my birthday a few weeks ago, which I’m not sure I want to shake entirely. After reviewing months-end financials, I can firmly say we are in a recession.
How do I know this? From the agencies I work with, management jobs have been contracted out but companies want you in the office 4 days a week, like an insured FTE1 . RFP2s from big clients are actual full project briefs with expectation of completion… without pay. An example: A prospective client asked me to present a full case study with a detailed description of how I would execute this specific brief, with actual projection calculations, etc. Followed by a 60 min presentation on my findings. A complete business case based on real numbers, not hypotheticals. The hiring manager wanted me to do his homework for free under the guise of an interview.
That’s not how this works Babes.
Also, what these contracts are worth now is half of what they were from a year ago. Basically – companies have work but they don’t want to pay full price to get the job done.
There are layers to this but the feeling I have now is the same as in February 2020, right before we went into lockdown. Companies cancelled contracts because they didn’t know what going to happen. The craziest recession indicator story I’ve heard was there are GoFundMe’s popping up on LinkedIn.
How am I being affected by these changes as a middle aged lady? Greatly.
My network has been eliminated from the work force. Don’t believe me? Look around you – where have all the 40 year old women gone? How many 40+year old Black women are in your office (70 year old Cheryl excluded)?
Exactly.
Balancing the books at the end of the month isn’t a fun task, but this month has me worried and asking – should I start an only fans? Bahumbug.
