Morning Musing on Summering At The Right Place, Wrong Time
Luvlies, Good morning. How is your summer going? Mine has been meh. In my previous life as a lady who lunched (lol), I always went somewhere in May, August and October. Since becoming a full-time contractor during a recession (double lol), that schedule has been pitched out the window. I never went to Black folks summering sites like Martha’s V or East Hampton as some family member’s did. I would go to camp – usually sport related, stay at a friend’s cottage in Apsley, or be in Europe the entire summer break.
Yeah, I was lucky like that. The verb ‘summer’ was pretentious in my day, and only pretentious ass hats would incorporate it into their conversations.
But there was a code about how you spent your summer months, like if you held the coveted role of junior counsellor at Biluim or B’nai Brith. A position I could never hold, at a place I could not go. Many a school friend talked about these camps for months after returning from either place – but were visibly annoyed when I share my adventures in China or the Caribbean.
Summer is like fight club for classists. Now, because of social media, everyone wants to enjoy the same heat like the ‘privileged’ do. So they’re heading to Martha’s V… but on the wrong dates. They’re in Montauk, when everyone else is in Deauville. A recreation season whack-a-mole if you will.
Why am I talking about this anyway? Well there was a video of a woman complaining that ‘she was at a lost‘ (*eyeroll*) because Martha’s Vineyard was a less than ideal place to go. She noted not having seen the Obama’s, and that the beach was like a sandbox. She was angry that this institution was nothing like its portrayal online. She was expecting corny Saint Tropez or boring yacht parties, and what she got was closer to the Ozarks (TV edition).
Gurl, shut-up. Not everything is for everyone, so cool it on the entitlement and stop bringing chaotic energy as your carry-on.
What was she gonna do if she saw the Obama’s anyway? Pitch an idea or scream like a fan and ask for pics? She was hunting for celebrities, and complaining when she couldn’t find any on their vacation.
For the privileged, these rustic palaces of pseudo suffering are the way the wealthy keep themselves in check. Log cabins with no heat or insulation, built by a great-grand parent 65 years ago, makes them feel like they’re connecting with their foreparents and pilgrims. Going to the alps for a much cooler climate, where they have to chop wood to stay warm in the log chalets at night, is how they cosplaying the good ol’ days.
So leave them to it.
Outsiders want to understand why society people want to hang out with mozzies and black flies the size of their hands, by a lake you can’t see the bottom of. But that’s the point. It’s not for those outside the community to understand.
Their vacation world is made for them – by them – so by the time the public hears about it, that’s only because they want clout chasers to fund their lifestyles. They want you to pay for the costs of that vacation property, by renting it out a few weeks a year. And they’ll find somewhere quieter to vacation again.
Recreation season whack-a-mole.
Truthfully, create the world you can afford, and enjoy it. Maybe in a few generations it’ll become a vacation destination or not.
Peaceful communities can be made anywhere. Focus on that instead.

…and that’s time. Still here? Share your thoughts below.
See you Luvlies!
