Scam Alert: Suspect Short Male With Too Much Time On His Hands

Morning Musing on How Scammers Be Scamming

Luvlies, Hands in the air! This is a stick-up. NOBODY MOVE… I mean it. It’s okay. I don’t mean it. You can move now, but this is how I felt yesterday shortly after publishing my piece on Gardens and Love. I went on LinkedIn (0/5 stars; do not recommend) to respond to an inquiry from an recruiter about my availability for a job. I sent him my CV and then we had a quick chat. This is not unusual to have a short ‘1st contact’ phone call. It moves things along quicker, than with emailing back and forth.

But something felt off. He wasn’t asking me the right questions. He said things like ‘I don’t see A/B testing as a skill on your resume’. At the senior level, nothing is released without A/B testing because it’s baked in the process… (stay on track Laney). He also wasn’t giving out information I needed about the role, he just wanted to go straight to the ‘Right to Represent’. I was under the impression that he was calling on behalf of the company, not an agency tendering for a role at the company. I asked the crucial question about the rates for the role, and he responded by asking me what I was expecting for a role like this.

The sign changed to amber at this point folks.

We have a new laws regarding financial transparency in Ontario, and if you’re soliciting potential employees, you have to openly post the pay range. None of this interviewing a candidate, only to find out it’s for a $20k role. All cash and valuables in the bag NOW.

So I asked what the rates were [RATES not rate cuz if you know you know], and he only gave me one number. Agents typically give out 2 numbers when asked this question, and the ones who don’t provide both, usually do not have the intention to pay you for the work needed – a lesson learned the hard way.

He was starting to slip-up and I could tell he was either not good agent or he didn’t have a job lead and was fishing for one (I’m tired of this Grandpa!). I told him to put the details in an email and I’ll have a look at it when I have a chance (I had to get ready for ballet and this call was annoying me). Then he said ‘Okay, I’ll send you the right to represent and a link for a $400…’

I hung up.

Immediately went on LI to report and block him. I blocked his number and email too. I shut that shit down with the quickness. You’re not going to attempt to rob me before 10 am. What am I gonna tell the cops? ‘Suspect used a mouse, a keyboard and LinkedIn to commit the crime officer’.

I am livid. After 16 years of using their stupid platform, of giving them my data to build their brand in hopes of getting a job on a platform that advertises work opportunities, I am now having to shake off scammers. It’s bad enough being on there, reading the shitty written, passive-aggressive, Ai slop on how I have to cater my CV to appeal to some beta rando on the internet. Now someone is trying to pick my digital pockets.

Give me an old-school pickpocket, where I can fight back or use bear spray. Where I can get in a few swift kicks to the groin, before I sprint away. Today, we’re being shaken down by a short male armed with a keyboard, and too much time on his hands.

We ride at dawn.

…and that’s time. Still here? Leave your thoughts down below.

See you tomorrow Luvlies!

xoxo Luv Laney Luv
