Morning Musing on Post-op Recovery
Luvlies, Good morning. Week 7 of my bewbie post-op recovery has ended, and so has my time with the Ontario Health At Home workers, who have helped me get better. My physical healing would have been difficult if these women hadn’t been here. They didn’t have big tasks to do around the house, partial because I was overly prepared to be weeks out of commission. They helped with the small things, like putting away dishes when I couldn’t bend forward or lift my arms, restock my fridge, throw out my trash, folding my laundry, and adjusting my makeshift hospital bed each time they came. Once I needed assistance with showering and washing my hair, and they didn’t make it awkward.
Yes, the program has it’s flaws. It doesn’t pay PSW (who are mostly asylum seekers) enough in wages. There is also a strange payment structure where the workers are paid for the hour or two of care they provide, but not for their travel time or transportation to your location. It’s complicated.
What’s important to know is this service is available to everyone with an OHIP card in need. Our taxes pay for it. If you are planning on having a surgery but need help at home, and can’t afford to pay $250/hr for private care, this service is for you. Whatever major medical procedure you’ve had, you let either the hospital social worker or your doctor/surgeon know that you need at home assistance, and they’ll make the arrangements for you. You can call them directly to request a referral for home care, but it’s better if your medical professional or SW does it on your behalf.
Honestly, I assumed I would have to be elderly or unhoused to get this kind of support, but that’s the biggest misconception with Ontario Health Services. It’s for any with a valid health card, who’s in need. Get off the fence about having that surgery because you live alone or can’t afford the costs of care. This solution will help make that decision easier. And no this is not an AD but a heartfelt thank you.
Thank you PSW ladies for getting me through this very difficult time and making the load of my recovery lighter.

…and that’s time. Still here? Leave your thoughts down below.
Enjoy the weekend Luvlies!
